The proposed log density gradient method corrects for residual errors in modern policy gradient methods, potentially improving sample complexity in reinforcement learning. This approach computes policy gradients using state-action discounted distributional formulations and is applicable to tabular Markov Decision Processes (MDPs). For more complex environments, a temporal difference (TD) method approximates the log density gradient using backward on-policy samples. Additionally, a min-max optimization is proposed to approximate the log density gradient using just on-policy samples. This method has been proven to be unique and convergent under linear function approximation. Experimental results show that the proposed method improves upon classical policy gradient methods in gridworld environments.
