Recent research has made significant progress in developing 1-bit Large Language Models (LLMs), such as BitNet. Our work introduces BitNet b1.58, a ternary {-1, 0, 1} variant that matches full-precision Transformer LLMs with the same model size and training tokens in terms of perplexity and end-task performance. This 1-bit LLM offers significant advantages in terms of latency, memory, throughput, and energy consumption compared to its full-precision counterpart. Moreover, it defines a new scaling law and recipe for training future generations of LLMs that are both high-performance and cost-effective. Furthermore, this innovation enables a new computation paradigm and opens the door for designing specific hardware optimized for 1-bit LLMs.

Imagine having powerful computers that can understand and process language quickly and efficiently. Recent research has made a big breakthrough in making these computers more affordable and faster by using something called 1-bit Large Language Models (LLMs). Our team developed a special type of LLM, called BitNet b1.58, which is much cheaper to run than the usual computer models. This new technology can help us build even better language understanding machines that are also energy-efficient. It’s an exciting step forward in the field of artificial intelligence and could lead to new innovations and applications.
