This paper presents a novel approach called Selective Reflection-Tuning, which enables large language models (LLMs) to refine their instruction-tuning data through a teacher-student collaboration. The method synergizes the reflection and introspection capabilities of a teacher LLM with the data selection ability of a student LLM, producing high-quality and student-compatible instruction-response pairs. This leads to sample-efficient instruction tuning and superior performance of LLMs. The authors apply their Selective Reflection-Tuning paradigm to Alpaca and WizardLM datasets, achieving top-tier 7B and 13B LLMs.
