Recent advancements in dialogue systems have led to the development of two distinct categories: task-oriented (TOD) and open-domain (chit-chat) dialogues. TOD systems aim to satisfy specific user goals, while open-domain systems focus on generating engaging conversations. To address concerns about long-turn naturalness and consistency, this paper introduces SalesBot 2.0, a revised version of the previously published data. By leveraging large language models’ (LLMs) commonsense knowledge through proper prompting, the objective is to bridge the gap between chit-chat and TOD, resulting in more human-like dialogues with smoother transitions between topics. The newly released dataset, with detailed annotations, can serve as a valuable resource for both academic research and commercial applications.

This paper is about making computer systems that can have conversations with people better. There are two types of conversations: ones that help you do something specific, like find a movie to watch, and ones that are just fun chat. Right now, these systems aren’t very good at smoothly switching between different topics during a conversation. The researchers want to fix this by teaching the computer system called SalesBot 2.0 how to use its common sense knowledge to make conversations more natural and consistent. They also created a big dataset with lots of examples that other people can use to improve their own chat systems.
