Existing RL techniques typically assume a global view of the network, which is not suitable for large-scale, dynamic, and privacy-sensitive settings. The authors propose a multi-agent approach that leverages both homophily and structural heterogeneity to efficiently search social networks.

Imagine you’re trying to find someone in a big social network. It’s like searching for a friend at a party, but instead of knowing everyone’s name, you only know a few people who can help you find them. This problem is called graph path search, and it’s been around for a long time. Recently, some smart computer programs used to learn how to solve this problem better than usual methods. But these programs need to look at the whole network, which isn’t always possible or safe. The researchers in this paper came up with a new way to solve this problem. Instead of looking at the whole network, they broke it down into smaller parts and had many small “agents” (like little computers) work together to find the person you’re looking for. This approach was successful in finding paths in both fake networks and real ones.
