The paper investigates two popular benchmarks for evaluating large language models (LLMs) in generating Python code, HumanEval and MBPP. A human evaluation reveals a significant bias towards a limited set of programming concepts, overlooking most others entirely. Additionally, the study finds an abundance of easy tasks that may artificially inflate model performance estimates. To address these limitations, the authors propose a new benchmark, PythonSaga, which features 185 hand-crafted prompts covering 38 programming concepts across varying difficulty levels.
