The paper investigates the claims of Theory of Mind (ToM) capabilities in Large Language Models (LLMs), particularly those similar to ChatGPT. Previous studies have demonstrated ToM capabilities using specific tasks, but subsequent studies showed that these abilities vanished when task variations were introduced. This work presents a novel dataset of 68 tasks for probing ToM in LLMs, categorized into 10 complexity classes. The authors evaluate the ToM performance of four open-source SotA LLMs on this dataset and another introduced by Kosinski (2023). The results indicate limited ToM capabilities, with all models performing poorly on tasks requiring realization of automatic state changes or relationship changes between objects. This study offers directions for further research on stabilizing and advancing ToM capabilities in LLMs.

This paper explores whether Large Language Models can really think like humans do. Some people claim that these models have a special kind of understanding called Theory of Mind, which lets them understand other beings’ thoughts and feelings. But when scientists tested this idea, they found that the models didn’t actually do very well when the tasks were changed slightly. To help figure out what’s going on, the researchers created a new set of 68 tasks to test how well these models can understand Theory of Mind. They used four different language models and compared their results with another set of tests done by someone else. The results showed that the models aren’t very good at understanding complex ideas or changing relationships between things.
