Contrastive representation learning, a self-supervised learning approach, has been successful in various downstream tasks. However, recent research suggests that increased mutual information does not always lead to better performance. This inconsistency inspires the question: what is the nature of the learned representations? Do they only contain task-relevant information or do they also carry task-irrelevant information that hinders performance? In this paper, we investigate the presence of superfluous information in contrastive learning and propose a novel objective, SuperInfo, to learn robust representations by combining predictive and superfluous information. Our approach can discard task-irrelevant information while preserving partial non-shared task-relevant information. Experimental results on image classification, object detection, and instance segmentation tasks demonstrate that our method outperforms traditional contrastive learning approaches with significant improvements.

This paper explores how machine learning models learn from data without labels. The model is good at many tasks, but some recent research showed that more information doesn’t always mean better results. This makes us wonder: what’s in the model’s “memory” anyway? Is it just useful information or also unnecessary stuff that gets in the way? To answer this, the researchers looked closer at how contrastive learning works and proposed a new approach called SuperInfo to learn better models. By combining important and unimportant information, they can get rid of the extra stuff while keeping the good parts.
