The authors procedurally generate tens of millions of 2D physics-based tasks to train a general RL agent for physical control using self-supervised learning on offline datasets. They leverage their novel hardware-accelerated physics engine Jax2D to simulate billions of environment steps during training, resulting in an agent that exhibits strong physical reasoning capabilities in 2D space and can zero-shot solve unseen human-designed environments. The paper demonstrates the feasibility of large-scale, mixed-quality pre-training for online RL, with fine-tuning showing significantly stronger performance than training a tabula rasa RL agent.
