The paper introduces an iterative L2-normalization method for 1D input, called IterL2Norm, which is designed to reduce data movement in transformer-based large language models. Layer normalization is a key workload in these models, and the new method enables fast convergence to a steady-state solution with high precision. Compared to the fast inverse square root algorithm, IterL2Norm outperforms it in six out of nine cases for FP32 and five out of nine for BFloat16 across different embedding lengths used in OPT models. The method is implemented in 32/28nm CMOS and can normalize vectors of dimensions between 64 and 1024 with a latency of 116-227 cycles at 100MHz/1.05V.
Low GrooveSquid.com (original content) Low Difficulty Summary
The paper improves transformer-based language models by reducing data movement. This helps make the models faster and more efficient. The researchers came up with a new way to do layer normalization, which is an important part of these models. Their new method works really well and can even beat another popular algorithm in many cases.
