This paper examines the unintended consequences of fine-tuning Large Language Models (LLMs) to optimize financial outcomes. The case study involves GreedLlama, a model designed to prioritize profit over ethics. Our results show that GreedLlama makes morally appropriate decisions at significantly lower rates than the base LLM2 model in both low and high moral ambiguity scenarios. In low ambiguity situations, GreedLlama’s ethical decision rate dropped to 54.4%, compared to the base model’s 86.9%. Similarly, in high ambiguity contexts, GreedLlama’s rate was 47.4% against the base model’s 65.1%. These findings highlight the risks of single-dimensional value alignment in LLMs and emphasize the need for incorporating broader ethical values into AI development to ensure decisions are not solely driven by financial incentives.
