Advanced analytics science has enabled the creation of hybrid human-algorithm models called centaurs, which combine formal analytics and human intuition to make superior decisions. We argue that the future of AI development should focus on centaurs rather than other approaches. Centaurs differ from human-in-the-loop methods by incorporating both human intuition and algorithmic decision-making. Effective methods for creating centaurs include generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs). The use of centaurs depends on the domain, with pure AI models being suitable in certain situations. While human intuition can be misleading, recent advancements in LLMs demonstrate that centaurs can outperform pure AI models. This work aims to address fundamental questions about centaurs, focusing on their critical essentiality to future AI endeavors.

A new way of using artificial intelligence (AI) and human thinking together is called a “centaur”. Centaurs combine the power of both AI and humans to make better decisions. We think that in the future, people should focus more on creating centaurs rather than just using one or the other. Centaurs are different from when humans work with AI, because they use both human ideas and algorithmic thinking. To create centaurs, we can use special types of AI called generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs). When to use centaurs depends on what you’re trying to do, but sometimes it’s better to just let the computer decide. This work is about understanding more about how centaurs work and why they are important for the future of AI.
