This study investigates the differences in linguistic features between human conversations and those generated by a language model (LLM), specifically ChatGPT-3.5. The research uses a dataset of 19.5K dialogues generated by ChatGPT-3.5 as a companion to the EmpathicDialogues dataset, employing Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) analysis to compare human and LLM-generated conversations across 118 linguistic categories. The results show that while human dialogues exhibit greater variability and authenticity, ChatGPT excels in categories such as social processes, analytical style, cognition, attentional focus, and positive emotional tone, reinforcing the notion that LLMs can be “more human than human.” However, no significant difference was found in positive or negative affect between ChatGPT and human dialogues. The research also contributes a novel dataset of conversations between two independent chatbots designed to replicate human conversations.
