This paper proposes a framework called “SPlit, UNlearn, MerGE” (SPUNGE) to amplify the effectiveness of machine unlearning in improving the safety of large language models. SPUNGE is designed to work with any unlearning method and leverages data attributes during the process. The framework splits unlearning data into subsets based on specific attribute values, unlearns each subset separately, and merges the unlearned models.
