This paper proposes a framework for fine-tuning consistency models via reinforcement learning (RL) to optimize text-to-image generative models for task-specific rewards and enable fast training and inference. The framework, called Reinforcement Learning for Consistency Model (RLCM), frames the iterative inference process of a consistency model as an RL procedure. RLCM is compared to RL-finetuned diffusion models, showing it trains significantly faster, improves generation quality measured under reward objectives, and speeds up inference by generating high-quality images in as few as two steps. The paper demonstrates RLCM’s ability to adapt text-to-image consistency models to challenging objectives, such as image compressibility and aesthetic quality derived from human feedback.
