The authors propose “Synergy of Thoughts” (SoT), a framework that leverages hybrid large language models (LLMs) with different scales for efficient reasoning. SoT generates multiple low-cost intuitive thoughts, mimicking the parallel intuitions produced by System 1, and uses a confidence evaluator to cross-evaluate these thoughts. If conflicts arise, SoT invokes reflective reasoning of scaled-up LLMs, emulating System 2’s intervention, to rectify results. This model-agnostic framework can be implemented with various off-the-shelf LLMs. Experiments on six tasks show that SoT reduces API cost by 38.3%-75.1% while achieving state-of-the-art reasoning accuracy and solution diversity.
