This paper presents a novel approach to prompt optimization for large language models (LLMs). Prompt optimization is the process of generating a text prompt that effectively captures the essence of a given task. The authors identify two key challenges in existing algorithmic approaches: they are limited in their ability to capture multiple facets of a complex task and struggle to generate long, complex prompts. To address these limitations, the authors introduce UniPrompt, an algorithm that learns to optimize prompts by breaking them down into loosely coupled semantic sections. UniPrompt consists of a generative model and a feedback mechanism that aggregates suggested edits from multiple mini-batches into a conceptual description for each section. The authors evaluate UniPrompt on multiple datasets and demonstrate its ability to generate high-accuracy prompts that outperform human-tuned prompts and state-of-the-art methods.
