This paper investigates the impact of Generative AI on the architectural design process, focusing on the role of the architect. A within-subject experiment using a text-to-image tool was conducted to explore how clients engage with designers through rapid visualization of their ideas. The results show that AI can disrupt the ideation phase by enabling client involvement and altering the architect’s role towards assessing feasibility. Additionally, AI’s feedback tends to hinder creativity and innovation by suggesting standardized designs over novel approaches. The study also highlights uncertainty among architects regarding the interpretative sovereignty of architecture and the loss of meaning and identity when AI takes over authorship.

This paper looks at how computers can help with building design. It asked people who make buildings, called architects, to try using a special tool that can create designs quickly. The tool is like a computer program that uses words and pictures together. The study found that this tool can change the way architects work. Now, clients (the people who want the building) can help with the design process by seeing their own ideas come to life on screen. This means architects have to focus more on making sure the designs are possible to build. Some good things came out of the study: it showed that computers can give helpful feedback on designs. But, it also found some bad things: the computers might not be able to come up with new and interesting ideas, which is what architects usually do.
