This scoping review systematically examines existing literature on the clinical value of large-scale generative AI applications in medical imaging. The study finds that most studies focus on improving report generation efficiency or translating reports for patient understanding, with some extending to direct interpretations. All studies were evaluated by clinicians and show excellent results using Large Language Models (LLMs) and multi-modal models. However, none have yet surpassed radiologists’ diagnostic performance. The review highlights the limitations of current applications and suggests that large-scale generative AI-based medical imaging foundation models are on the horizon, potentially transforming clinical practice.
Low GrooveSquid.com (original content) Low Difficulty Summary
This study looks at how artificial intelligence (AI) can help with medical imaging. Right now, there aren’t enough doctors to analyze all the images, so AI might be a solution. The researchers looked at many studies that used big AI models to improve medical image analysis. They found that these models are good at doing certain things, like generating reports or helping patients understand their results. However, they’re not yet as good as human doctors at diagnosing problems. The study says that we might see a new type of AI model soon that will change how doctors work with images.
