To mitigate CF, existing approaches often employ a fixed-size memory buffer to store old samples for replay when training on new tasks. However, there is no consensus on how to leverage predictive uncertainty information for effective memory management, leading to conflicting strategies. This work proposes an in-depth analysis of different uncertainty estimates and strategies for populating the memory, providing insights into the characteristics of data points that can alleviate CF. Furthermore, it presents a novel method for estimating predictive uncertainty using generalized variance induced by negative log-likelihood and demonstrates its effectiveness in reducing CF across various settings.
