This paper presents a novel approach to achieving energy efficiency in artificial intelligence (AI) computing platforms through model-based reinforcement learning (MBRL) using spiking neural networks (SNNs) on mixed-signal analog/digital neuromorphic hardware. The proposed method, inspired by biological systems, alternates between online and offline learning phases, referred to as the “awake” and “dreaming” phases, respectively. This allows for high sample efficiency while leveraging the energy efficiency of neuromorphic chips. The model consists of two interconnected networks: an agent network that learns through real and simulated experiences, and a learned world model network that generates these experiences. To validate the approach, the authors train the hardware implementation to play the Atari game Pong, demonstrating significant reduction in required real game experiences when incorporating dreaming. This work paves the way for energy-efficient neuromorphic learning systems capable of rapid learning in real-world applications.
