This paper proposes a novel approach to graph learning by conceptualizing graphs as hierarchical structures, utilizing node clustering to capture broader structural information. The authors argue that existing methods rely on fixed graph coarsening routines, leading to overly homogeneous cluster representations and loss of node-level information. To address this issue, they introduce the Node-to-Cluster Attention (N2C-Attn) mechanism, which incorporates techniques from Multiple Kernel Learning into the kernelized attention framework. The authors also devise an efficient form for N2C-Attn using the cluster-wise message-passing framework, achieving linear time complexity. They demonstrate the capability of N2C-Attn to merge dual-granularity information and propose the Cluster-wise Graph Transformer (Cluster-GT) architecture, which uses node clusters as tokens and employs their proposed N2C-Attn module. The authors show that Cluster-GT achieves superior performance on various graph-level tasks.

This paper is about a new way to learn things from graphs by looking at them in different ways. Currently, most methods are good at finding patterns in graphs, but they don’t do well when the graph is big or complex. The authors of this paper came up with an idea called Node-to-Cluster Attention that helps computers understand both small and big patterns in graphs. They also created a special computer program called Cluster-wise Graph Transformer that uses their new technique to do even better than before. This can be useful for lots of things, like understanding how people connect online or how molecules interact with each other.
